The Nicola Valley Community Theatre Society Project
PURPOSE: To provide a community theatre facility that will be made available to exhibit, present, and perform educational works of artistic merit that will be of benefit to the community as a whole.
“The Society wishes to acknowledge the City of Merritt for giving it municipal tax exemption status. We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Province of British Columbia.”
The Nicola Valley Community Theatre Society, in Merritt, B.C., is proposing to build a new 14,000 sq. ft. stand-alone building, a community theatre facility complete with four screens and state of the art projection and theatre technology; this to provide high-quality viewing/participation experiences for the community as a whole. The community theatre will be working closely with user groups to offer documentary films and first-run movies; classical music and concerts, cultural and heritage events, and exhibitions and performances, all of artistic merit.
The multiplex venue will be located on the south-east corner of Garcia Street and Coutlee Avenue.
In addition to the four theatres or screen rooms, the Nicola Valley Community Theatre facility will have a concession area, lobby, office and a storage area. One of the screen rooms will be designed for multi-purpose use, including arts and culture performances, theatre productions, and other events for which a stage is needed.
The primary focus of the Nicola Valley Community Theatre Society will be to provide land, building, and equipment to establish a performing arts facility. By providing a Cultural space the Society hopes to encourage and promote theatre arts, public education, and aesthetic awareness. The Society will work closely with user groups toward the presentation of arts, heritage and culture events, and social recreational activities for the citizens of the Nicola Valley. In recognition of the relatively small market size, the movie theatres will offer an array of products and services such as live streaming of HD national and international theatre performances. This community facility will be open to film festivals, lectures, conferences, and events meant to appeal to as broad a range of the population as possible.
The project will have five phases. We have entered Phase 2.
PHASE 1 ($300,000) – Purchase of property that will be the future home of the Nicola Valley Community Theatre Society.
PHASE 1 COMPLETE!
WE ARE CURRENTLY IN PHASE 2.
PHASE 2 ($136,000) – Detailed architectural drawings, cost breakdown of construction ….. and underneath, the figure of the layout. The Architect is Chris Allen of Landform Architecture Ltd.
The drawings below represent an artist’s rendition of a four-screen movie theatre that will fit on the property with a footprint of 14,000 sq.ft. This is a preliminary concept drawing.
Once the project’s funding is in place, a proper architect’s drawing will be prepared.
PHASE 3 ($100,000) – Building permits and development costs.
PHASE 4 ($3,200,000) – Construction of building.
PHASE 5 ($700,000) – Equipment and Furnishings.
